(What was his secret scandal?)---Attend the program to find out!

Sheriff Rankin Scott Kelly, 1st Sheriff El Paso County, Colorado Territory 1861-1867

Presented by: John Anderson, 26th Sheriff El Paso County 1995-2003

John's PowerPoint presentation is based on his book published by the Old Colorado City Historical Society (OCCHS). This non-fiction book tells the story of the life and times of the first lawman in the Pikes Peak Region.

Attempting to conceal his darkest secret, Kelly traveled west on the Santa Fe Trail  with a wagon train of about 50 men, women and children. They arrived in Colorado City on June 5, 1860.

Scott Kelly, as he was known to his friends, was appointed Sheriff the following year when the Colorado Territory was first established.

Kelly’s first job was to take on the Salt Lake City Jim Gang. This was the first of Kelly’s many gunfights with outlaws and hostile Indians.

Bio: John Anderson is an author, artist and historian. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2012 to launch a small consulting business allowing him the freedom to pursue his love of history, writing and the arts. Prior to working ten years in the corporate world, John served two-terms as the elected Sheriff for El Paso County, Colorado (term-limited in 2003). He completed an MBA while working as a police officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department and retired at the rank of Sergeant in 1995. Although John has traveled around the world, including several adventures on a catamaran sailing the Caribbean, three corporate security assignments into a combat zone on the Horn of Africa and landing on an aircraft carrier at sea in the Pacific Ocean, he remains most fascinated by the rich history and art discovered in his own backyard in the American Southwest.

John has led the fascinating and fun Ute Tree Tours for the Highlands Ranch Historical Society.
