Young Cowboy Meets HRCA---20 Year Relationship Ensues!!

Gary Debus, HRCA General Manager from 1991- 2010, Discusses His

20 Years at HRCA. This Time was Marked by Tremendous Growth, Fun and Interesting Activities

Gary Debus met with Mark Stevenson (HRHS) at Penley Ranch, a homestead ranch west of Sedalia in Douglas County, CO to do an oral history for the Highlands Ranch Historical Society.

Gary was "the man" in Highlands Ranch. Working with the Highlands Ranch leadership, the Highlands Ranch Board and the Highlands Ranch Delegates, the Highlands Ranch Metro District, Centennial Water and the Douglas County Commissioners, he was always attending meetings.

Gary helped guide the development of Highlands Ranch. His pursuit for funding for a Highlands Ranch recreation center took him to New York to acquire bond funding. Gary tells of this experience and why HR now has four recreation centers.

Participating at many committee and board meetings, Gary oversaw the Homeowners Regulations, the development of HR, events such as the Rodeo, Circus, Carnival, Car Shows, etc. as well as the trails and Backcountry development.

Highlands Ranch thrived with the guidance of this cowboy.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS:  Gary Debus

Gary Debus grew up on a ranch in Northeast Colorado near Proctor. Gary spent ten years in 4-H and showed cattle at the Logan County and Colorado State Fairs in addition to the National Western Stock Show. After graduating from Caliche High School, he attended the Colorado School of Mines and earned a degree in Mining Engineering while working underground to pay the bills. These life experiences left him with a strong work ethic and a desire to be successful in any endeavor undertaken.

One day, he stumbled onto a small ad in the Rocky Mountain News, and the rest is history. Highlands Ranch became the home for Gary and the love of his life, Roberta. They raised their family here and were rooted deep in the award-winning Highlands Ranch Community Association, the fastest growing community in the country, during his twenty-year tenure. The HRCA was the perfect fit for Gary's skills, passions, and ability to connect with people. It also fit his lifestyle and passion for the outdoors, recreation, his love of ranching, the family dogs, and of course his beloved American Quarter Horses. Gary and Roberta now live at their ranch west of Sedalia and still have a strong connection to Highlands Ranch.

Colorado has always had lots of rock to work with, so building a castle was appealing on many levels.  It was local, and it showed off how much money the builder had to spend.  Join us for a little history and visual touring of some Colorado castles .  There aren't many, so each one is a gem.

Kevin Snow has owned Denver History Tours since 2005, largely leading folks around Colorado, but now also reaching the whole West and the wider world.
